Four Players Reach Double Figures as Women's Basketball Downs Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and the Chargers held Franklin Pierce under 21 percent from the field in the second half, downing the Ravens 56-46 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Wednesday night. New Haven is now 3-13 overall and 2-9 in the NE10.

"Our defensive intensity was really great tonight and we fed off of that," said head coach LaTonya Watson. "Our post defense was outstanding this evening."

The Chargers got off to a hot start from the field, shooting 53.3 percent in the opening period including three-pointers by Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic), en route to an 18-13 lead at the end of the first. The scoring pace slowed in the second quarter as both teams had trouble holding onto the ball, combining for 11 turnovers. The Chargers maintained the lead through the majority of the period before a trey by Cameryn Wilson with 1:23 to go in the half and a pair of free throws allowed the Ravens to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room.

New Haven tied the game on a three-pointer by Sade King (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon / Hampton University) to open the third period, igniting a 13-3 run to open the frame as the Chargers took a 39-32 lead on an Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) free throw at the midway mark, eventually holding a 42-36 lead heading into the fourth. Undaunted, Franklin Pierce scored the first two baskets of the fourth period. A pair of Kelsey Mayo makes from the line cut the New Haven lead to 45-42 at the 5:52 mark before the Blue and Gold had the final say as an 8-0 run in the next three minutes put the game out of reach.
