GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The unbeaten and #10 ranked Adelphi Panthers scored the game-winning goal off of a free kick in the 90
th minute of action as the University of New Haven women's soccer team was dealt a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on Wednesday evening in a Northeast-10 match at Motamed Field.
With each team seeing only one shot on goal in the first stanza, the defensive battle continued throughout the entirely of the second half. Out of the locker room, Adelphi had a quick scoring opportunity with a header shot off a corner kick that hit the crossbar just under two minutes after the break. th minute and with each side coming closer and closer to scoring the contests first goal, senior
Kelly Quigley (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) fed a corner kick to the head of classmate
Rachel Dempsey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) that beat the keeper and was headed for the mesh, but was saved by Panther forward Jeanine Nunez. Junior
Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) put another shot on target for New Haven that was once again saved as the intensity heightened.
In the 75
th minute, Adelphi saw their best opportunity yet with a shot made by Taylor Sipos that was saved by Davis, but the ball was spilled and dribbled toward the end line but Davis was able to collapse on top of the ball to preserve the score. With the match appearing like it was headed to extra time, Adelphi drew a foul on the near side just five yards away from the corner, as the Panthers were able to serve the ball in like a corner kick that was headed home by Nunez with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation.
Adelphi pounded out shots all night long as New Haven only allowed one goal out of 24 total shots. Of New Haven's six shots, five were on target. Sophomore
Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) and Morello led with two shots on goal each, and Dempsey finished with one. In goal, Davis made a season-high five saves in her fifth career start.
New Haven returns to action at on Saturday, October 14
th when they host Mercy for Senior day in a non-conference match. Kickoff at Kayo Field is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
