Volleyball Rattles Off Ninth Straight, Sweeps Franklin Pierce in Three

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team extended its win streak to nine straight matches on Saturday, defeating Northeast-10 conference foe Franklin Pierce University in straight sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-21). Leading the Chargers was junior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who closed out the afternoon with nine kills, 20 assists and seven digs.

Rios was one of seven Chargers who provided offense on Saturday, with her nine kills tied with freshman Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) for the team lead. Among the pair of leaders, Rios led New Haven with a .348 attack percentage as both her and Greathead each finished with one miscue. Rios' 20 assists led New Haven as she combined with freshman Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) in the 6-2 offense with Chan closing out the match with 11 assists.

Joining in the hitting efforts was senior Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who finished with eight kills, sophomore Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who chipped in five kills, senior Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who added four and seniors Fernanda da Silva (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Berlaar Sao Pascoal) and Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) who each finished with a pair. Overall as a team, New Haven finished the match with 39 kills in 118 total attempts for a hitting average of .220.

A pair of Chargers combined for New Haven's four total service aces with Martins and junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) each finishing with a two.

Defensively, Kim led New Haven with 18 digs, one of two players in double figures as she was joined by Greathead who finished with 10 defensive stops. New Haven also benefited from four total blocks, led by Rios who had a pair of stuffs.

New Haven will continue a stretch of three games in five days with a Tuesday night match-up with the Adelphi Panthers. Opening serve at Charger Gymnasium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
