WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Adelphi in five sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-6), improving to 9-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The victory is the 10th straight for New Haven who improves to 14-7 overall and now holds a two-match advantage in the conference standings with five matches remaining in the league schedule.
Leading the Chargers on the night was junior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who compiled her third triple double of the season. Overall for the match, Rios was one of five hitters in double figures as she hammered 15 kills, hitting a combined .250 for the match. Senior outside hitter Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) led all of the Blue and Gold's hitters with 17 kills, while freshman outside hitter Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) added 16 and sophomore right side Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) chipped in 10.
Among all the leading hitters, Nowicki led the way with a .292 attack percentage with four errors in 24 attempts. As a team, New Haven finished its third five-set match of the season with a .223 attack percentage with a combined 68 kills in 193 attempts. The Chargers best hitting came in the deciding set when they finished without an error in 12 attempts, putting six of those attempts to the floor for kills.
Running a 6-2 offense, Rios was one of two Chargers captaining the offense as she finished with 26 assists while freshman setter Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) finished with 31 to lead the team. Sophomore libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) added eight. The Chargers also combined for seven service aces, led by Martins who drilled four.
Defensively, Rios led the team with 21 digs, one of five players with double figure digs. Kim and Chan each followed her with 17 defensive stops, while Martins and Greathead rounded out the leaders with 13 each. As a team, the Blue and Gold also combined for four total blocks with Greathead, Nowicki and senior Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) each finishing with two.
The Chargers next return to the court on Saturday when they host the Stonehill Skyhawks in an NE10 match-up. Opening serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Fans unable to attend the match can follow all the action live on the Charger Sports Network with live stats and video.
