WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team settled for a scoreless draw at Multi-Sport Stadium against the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a double-overtime Northeast-10 matchup on Wednesday evening.
New Haven nearly took the lead in the 16
th minute when
Mawasi Charles (Barataria, Trinidad/St. Anthony's College) one–timed a pass outside the six-yard box that beat the Greyhound keeper but went just wide of the net. In the 20
th minute, Assumption got a good look at the net from the near side, but the Chargers were able to block the shot. From that play, the Greyhounds were able to get two consecutive corner kicks as the Chargers defense stepped up and held the match scoreless.
After the halftime break, the Chargers nearly put a shot home again when
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) received a through ball just outside the 18-yard box and was 1-on-1 with Murray, however Murray made the charging save to deflect the ball out of bounds. By the end of regulation, New Haven had outshot the Greyhounds, 20-16, and saves were nearly identical, with Assumption making five stops compared to Lorusso's three. In the final 30 minutes of action, Assumption and New Haven each had chances as the match ended in a 0-0 double overtime draw with Lorusso earning his first shutout of the season.
Final stats saw New Haven with the advantage in shots, 26-22 with seven shots on goal for the Chargers and five for the Greyhounds.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, October 21
st with their final road regular season match at Stonehill. Match time is slated for 12:00 pm.
