WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven field hockey team played their final home game of the season on a cool Wednesday night which resulted in a 1-0 loss to the Mercy Mavericks.

Despite not being able to find the back of the net, the Chargers had a slew of opportunities with a season high 10 shots on the night with two of them on goal.

Freshman Shelby Card (Milanville, Pa./Honesdale) took a line drive shot from the feed of an offensive corner that was saved by the Mavericks' goalkeeper in the first minute of the game. The save resulted in another offensive corner for the Chargers where Card's second shot was blocked. Sophomore Ashley Higgins (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) had another opportunity to take the lead when she took a shot that just went high of the net. Freshman Maecy Chlebowski (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) also recorded a shot in the first half that just missed to the right.

Even though the Mavericks out-shot the Chargers in the first half seven to four, the game was scoreless at halftime. During the second half, the two teams each had six shots. The lone goal of the night came in the 45th minute when Mercy's Kimberly Sands was able to send one home off a penalty corner.
