Women's Soccer Slips to 2-2 (2 OT) Draw Versus Saint Anselm

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team scored two first half goals, but the Hawks scored two goals of their own in the second frame as the Chargers settled for a 2-2 draw in a Northeast-10 battle at Kayo Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior Rachel Dempsey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) found the back of the net first for the Chargers, getting help from freshman Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) who chipped up a pass from midfield. Dempsey was able to control the ball to her left side and fool the keeper on her right side to take the lead. New Haven continuously threatened on the attacking end with junior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) taking command with two back-to back shots on goal, finally striking in the 37th minute with a screaming shot to the top right corner of the net, assisted by senior Kelly Quigley (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial). Senior Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) had an opportunity in the final eight minutes of the half when she went one-on-one with the Hawks keeper, however her shot went just high of the net.

Saint Anselm got on board first with an own goal when Hawk defender Alexis Elowitch took a low free kick on the near side that deflected off of a New Haven player and hit the top of the crossbar and just bounced past the goal line. Elowitch leveled the match in the 66th minute, beating a diving Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes-Barre) to the right side. New Haven had two more shots for the remainder of the half before the match went into extra time.

After the first overtime did not see a goal, Davis started overtime off with a save in the 108th minute. New Haven got into the six-yard box and put a shot in the net following a scrum, however a foul was called and time soon expired.

On the evening, New Haven outshot the Hawks 13-9, with six of those shots on goal. The Chargers finished with five corner kicks, and Davis made two saves in goal. Morello led the team in shots with five with three of them coming on target. Dempsey tallied three shots, and Quigley had two.

The Blue and Gold is on the road for their regular season finale, taking on Bentley on Saturday October 28th with an 11:00 am kickoff. Following the results of that match, New Haven will await the scores of other NE10 scores to determine their playoff fate.
