WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team earned their first Northeast-10 win of the season behind a total team effort on Tuesday afternoon, taking down the defending NE10 Champions, Stonehill by a score of 2-1.
The Chargers got on the scoreboard first in the 23rd minute when junior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) collected a cross into the box off the corner kick from Sorcha Ni Bhraonain (Galway, Ireland/Colaiste Cholmcille). New Haven would extend that lead nearly 15 minutes later when junior Emily Bergold (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) scored the eventual game winner and headed the ball off of another corner kick taken by senior Kelly Quigley (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial). Stonehill broke the shutout with three minutes left in the second frame when Meredith Moore headed the ball home in a scrum inside the six yard box.
New Haven also saw an impressive start from freshman goalkeeper Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes-Barre), who made seven saves in her second start of the season and did not allow a goal for the first 87 minutes of play.
The Chargers also had 18 shots on the night and were able to put 10 shots on target, including three from Quigley.
The Chargers continue their short homestand when they host Assumption College on Saturday, October 7th. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM at Kayo Field, and for fans who cannot make it to the game, live stats and video will be available at NewHavenChargers.com.
