Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morello's 65th Minute Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to Victory Over Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to take down Assumption in Northeast-10 action at Kayo Field on Saturday evening.

Both Morello and senior Kelly Quigley (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) had four shots on the night with two on goal, and junior Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) and senior Rachel Dempsey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) each sent two shots on target.

Assumption opened up the scoring in the 22nd minute when Ania Spina sent a left footed free kick from 25 yards out to the top left corner of the mesh for the game's first strike. Exactly five minutes later, Morgan shielded a defender and collected a bouncing ball in the penalty area. Turning to her right foot, Morgan set a low shot across the goal mouth and past a diving Greyhound keeper to level the score. Neither team had many opportunities for the remainder of the half and the 1-1 score line carried into halftime.

New Haven buried their second goal of the game and took the lead in the 65th minute when Morello tapped in a shot right on the goalmouth after headers from Dempsey and Matassa were initially stopped. The goal proved to be just enough for the Chargers as they held off a flurry of Greyhound attacks over the final 20 minutes of regulation, including a great chance in the 84th minute when Davis made a great diving stop to deflect a shot off the crossbar and collected the rebound to keep Assumption in check. The Chargers were able to hold off the Greyhounds for the remainder of the half to

The Greyhounds finished the match with 11 shots compared to the Chargers 10, with six of New Haven's shots on target. In net, freshman Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes-Barre) earned her second win as a Charger and made four saves in the win.

New Haven returns to action on the road at Adelphi University on Wednesday, October 11th. Match time at Motamed Field is set to kick off at 7:00 pm. Live stats will be available for fans who cannot attend the game.
