WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) earned the clinching point at No. 6 singles for the University of New Haven women's tennis team to propel the Chargers to a crucial 5-4 win over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 match at the New Haven Tennis Courts on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
Freshmen
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) started their day off strong at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Abby Ramsay and Margaret de Pont. New Haven earned their second point of the day at No. 3 doubles when sophomore
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and junior
Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) took down Katie Costa and Melissa Wood, 8-6.
Gonzalez would then go on to earn a convincing victory at No. 1 singles, sailing past Ramsay, 6-1, 6-0. Rodriguez took a point at the No. 2 doubles court with two-straight 6-3 sets over de Pont.
With the score tied at four, the match clinching point came down to sophomore
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip). After winning the first set, 6-3 and dropping the second set, the third set was down to the wire when Clyne earned the match-winning point for the Chargers in a tiebreak to take the final set, 7-6 (7-2).
