MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss against the Saint Anselm Hawks at Melucci Field on Saturday afternoon.
New Haven had two shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of play from sophomore
Pablo Perez (Medellin, Columbia/West Haven) and junior
Sukrija Dudic (Richmond, Va./Hermitage), but could not convert on the chances. With the first 40 minutes of the match scoreless, Saint Anselm broke the score in the 41
st minute off of a cross on the left end line and scored on a tap in goal past sophomore keeper
Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College).
New Haven came out of the locker room with momentum with the first shot of the half by sophomore
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) that was blocked. The Chargers got an opportunity on a corner kick, but junior
George Tighe (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Boys College) took a shot that was also blocked by the Hawks. The Chargers then forced four Saint Anselm fouls in a row when on the fourth, Peduzzi got a good look at the net on a free kick, but could not put his shot home as the ball volleyed around the back post off of the free kick.
Saint Anselm scored again in the 56
th minute to extend the lead, but the Chargers could not catch up, despite taking four more shots by the time expired.
On the afternoon, the Chargers nearly matched the Hawks in shots with 12 compared to the 15 shots the Hawks took, and New Haven had Saint Anselm beat in corner kicks with five. Lorusso made six total saves in net on the afternoon.
