SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team scored 27 fourth quarter points to knock off the American International Yellow Jackets, 75-63 to secure its first Northeast-10 win of the season, behind a combined 43 points by junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and freshman
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) at Butova Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
Cubbage led all scorers with a season-high 23 total points on the evening, shooting 9-of-15 to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Pergola had a breakthrough performance, shooting 62-percent from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the stripe, adding up to a season-high 20 points. She also dished out for assists and brought down five rebounds in the win. Rounding out the three double-digit scorers for the Chargers was senior
Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) who scored 11 points on the season with seven free throws made.
Freshman
Nadia Mirich (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) performed well on the glass tonight with a team-leading seven rebounds while Trowell finished with six. Mirich and junior
Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) had six points each for New Haven, while junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had five and
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) scored four.
New Haven shot 46-percent on the night and led by as many 14 points while also outrebounding the Yellow Jackets, 40-37. The Chargers 75 points scored was the most allowed by the Yellow Jackets in their four total contests this season.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven got off to a slow start, shooting 0-for-4 with a turnover in the first three minutes of the contest before Pergola stopped the drought with a jumper at the 7:03 mark.
- Following Pergola's jumper, New Haven caught fire, going on an 8-2 run broken up by two Yellow Jacket free throws and then igniting to another 7-0 run.
- Pergola scored the first four points for the Chargers with two jump shots to get the early lead, which proved to last throughout the remainder of the contest.
- American International chipped back with a 7-0 run, cutting the into the Charger lead, 17-13.
- The Chargers forced six of the Yellow Jackets 16 total turnovers in the first frame.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven continued their hot streak in the second quarter, outscoring American International 13-6 over in under a six-minute stretch. During that stretch, sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) got her first four points of the game with a layup assisted by Pergola followed by two free throws.
- Cubbage capped off the Chargers scoring in the second quarter with a jumper to tie the Chargers largest lead of the game at 11 points. Pergola finished off with two free throws to send the Chargers lead to 13 points by the halfway point.
- New Haven outscored the Yellow Jackets 19-12 in the second quarter, eventually resulting in the largest individual quarter scoring margin of the matchup.
- New Haven held the Yellow Jackets to 6-of-26 from the field in the first half and 0-of-4 behind the arc.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- American International scored nine-straight points out of the locker room in the third quarter, slicing the lead to as little as four points before Cubbage and Pergola each net two points to further pull apart the lead. Cubbage hit a free throw to end the quarter with the visiting team heading into the fourth quarter, leading 48-37.
- The third quarter was the lone frame of the contest where the Yellow Jackets outscored the Chargers, 16-12.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- Scoring was back and forth to start the fourth quarter with each team exchanging two field goals each. Trowell hit two free throws, but the se see-sawing continued as both team exchanged a bucket six times each for the next three minutes. Within that time frame, Mirich scored four of her six points on the evening.
- New Haven reached its largest lead with another 6-0 run as Cubbage connected with Pergola for a jump shot, junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) sunk the Chargers first three-pointer of the game, and Trowell put in a free throw. Down by 14 points with 56 seconds left on the clock, American International began fouling, where the Chargers were able to score their last seven points on free throws to finish the game, 75-63.
With the win, New Haven improves to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the NE10. American International falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the NE10. Following the Thanksgiving break, New Haven returns to the court on Sunday, November 26
