Greathead Hammers 25 Kills in Five Set Thriller over SNHU on Senior Day

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) closed out an impressive match hammering 25 kills to lead the University of New Haven volleyball team to a five-set (25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9) thriller over Southern New Hampshire on Senior Day at Charger Gym. The win for New Haven is the 14th straight for the Blue and Gold and extends their unblemished record in the Northeast-10 to 12-0 (18-7 overall) with two matches remaining in the regular season.

Greathead's career-high 25 kills led all players in the match as she is the second player this season to record a 25-kill match, the previous being senior Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) against Southern Connecticut State on September 26. At the time, Martins was the first Charger to record 25 or more kills since the 2012 season. For the match, the rookie outside hitter connected on .411 percent of her 56 attempts, suffering just two errors on the day. She was also among the defensive leaders with 18 digs, completing her fifth double double of the season.

Joining Greathead in leading the offense was Martins who finished with 17 kills while junior Kristine Martins and senior Fernanda da Silva (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Berlaar Sao Pascoal) each added seven kills. Combined on the day, the Chargers finished with 64 kills, all coming from seven different players. Overall, junior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) captained New Haven's offense, finishing with a season-high 48 assists.

In addition to the hitting, the Chargers secured eight points on service aces with Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) leading the team, matching her career-high with five. Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) (two) and Martins each joined Hacker in scoring off unreturned serves.

Defensively, New Haven was led by junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) who finished with a career-high 25 digs, her 19th straight match with double figures stops. Joining her in leading the way was Martins who finished with 19 digs, her most in a Charger uniform and the fifth time this season she has finished with a double double. Greathead's 18 digs was joined by Rios to round out the defensive leaders.

The Chargers will play their final two regular season matches away from the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium before returning home to open NE10 Conference Championship play on Tuesday, November 14. Prior to that, the Blue and Gold will look to remain unbeaten in regular season NE10 action with back-to-back matches next weekend, traveling to Saint Michael's on Friday, November 10 (5:00 p.m.) and Saint Anselm on Saturday, November 11 (12:00 p.m.).
