Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Night for Oge Helps Women's Basketball Soar Over Chestnut Hill, 76-53

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid at Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday evening, soaring past the Chestnut Hill Griffins (6-6, 2-1 CACC) by a 76-53 score in the non-conference matchup. The win was the largest margin of victory this season for New Haven and also closed out the 2017 home slate.

For the first time this season, four Chargers finished in double digit scoring as junior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) shot 47-percent (8-of-17) and sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) finished with a 50-percent mark (7-of-14) and were the catalysts with 16 points each. Junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) shot 5-of-10 from the field for 14 total points and an unblemished 4-of-4 beyond the arc, and junior Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) added 10 points on the night.

Oge completed her double double, shattering her career-high in rebounds with 18 total boards, knocking out her previous career-best of 14 against Southern New Hampshire on January 21 of last season. Wormack collected nine rebounds for the fifth time this season, and Kerr pulled down five. On the night, Oge was also the leader in both steals and blocks with four and two, respectively.

As a team, New Haven's shooting efforts were balanced throughout the night, connecting on 44-percent of shots in the first half and 40-percent in the second half, while also reaching a season-best 48-percent from the three-point line. New Haven also tied its season-high mark in rebounds with 49 and had a season-high 18 assists.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • Oge hit the first field goal of the game followed by a Chestnut Hill three before sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) drained a triple from the elbow for what would eventually be her lone field shot of the day.
  • New Haven went on an 11-0 run to get the first big lead. During the stretch, Wormack went on a tear, scoring eight straight points for the Chargers with three-straight two-pointers.
  • Wormack continued with the hot hand, sinking two consecutive layups as New Haven extended the lead, 17-7. Oge made one last bucket before the first quarter, assisted by freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington).
  • In the first frame, Wormack shot 5-of-7 from the field and made two free throws, reaching the double digit mark after the first ten minutes with 12 points.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • Cubbage and Oge combined for 17 of the team's 22 tallies during the second stanza.
  • After Chestnut Hill cut the lead to five points, the Chargers used a 16-2 burst to take a 19-point lead, 37-18.
  • As a team, New Haven shot 50 percent on 9-of-18 shooting.
  • Chestnut Hill's Jaeda Wildgoose scored nine of her 18 points during the second quarter.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Kerr opened the second half with consecutive three-pointers, and eventually made three triples during the quarter.
  • The Chargers held the Griffins to just 18 percent shooting, but Chestnut Hill was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • New Haven took their largest lead at 26 points when Pergola knocked down a jumper at the 5:16 mark.
  • The Chargers made four of their seven three-point baskets during the stanza.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • Heading into the final frame, New Haven led by 21 points and kept rolling until the final buzzer.
  • Six different Chargers scored in the Stanza, led by Kerr who went 2-of-3 from the field with a three-pointer, and Oge who shot 2-of-2 with two rebounds.
  • Junior Aliyah Christy (Stratford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas) and Kerr capped off the night with three-pointers in back to back possessions, running away with the 24-point win.

With the win, New Haven improves to 6-6 on the season. The Chargers will enjoy a lengthy break over the holiday season, returning to action on New Years Eve for a non-conference game against Post University. Tip off at the Drubner Center is slated for 1:00 pm.
