Wormack's Near Double-Double Unable to Push Women's Basketball Past Saint Rose in Overtime

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – For the first time this season, the University of New Haven women's basketball team had three scorers finish in double digits, however it was not enough as the Chargers fell to the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights (4-3, 2-1 NE10), 65-63 in overtime at Charger Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 game.
 
Freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) led all scoring for the second-straight game with 19 points, shooting 7-of-17 from the field and making a team-high three treys on the day. Pergola also pulled down four rebounds on the day and had one block, one steal, and only committed one turnover in a team-high 41 minutes played on the floor. Junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) pitched in 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists. Sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) rounded out the top three scorers, nearly reaching a double double with 12 points on the day on 43-percent shooting with nine boards, the most on the team. She also finished with a team-best three steals on the day. Junior Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) shot 3-of-4 from the field on the game with three free throws for nine points, while senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) nail two three-pointers for six points and senior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) added two points for New Haven.
 
As a team, New Haven shot 36-percent from the floor on the day while Saint Rose finished with a 52-percent performance. Saint Rose also finished with just one more rebound than the Chargers, 39-38.
 
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • Smith found pergola Pergola who hit a three-point basket from the elbow to open up the scoring just over ten seconds into the contest.
  • After two straight Kerr free throws at the 8:11 mark, the Golden Knights scored ten straight points, holding New Haven scoreless for 3:25. New Haven got back into things with 54 seconds remaining with a Wormack jump shot to put the Golden Knights lead at 14-7 through the first frame.
  • Saint Rose shot 7-of-15 from the floor in the first half to pull away from New Haven early on. New Haven had 10 rebounds to start off, led by Kerr who had three boards total.
 
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • New Haven heated up for the second quarter, converting on 8-of-15 attempts from the field for a 53-percent shooting mark.
  • Pergola was perfect in the second frame, successfully making all three of her field goals while going 2-of-2 from long range. Smith was also perfect from behind the arc on both of her three-point attempts.
  • After Saint Rose scored the first four points, Pergola got a pass from Kerr to put in the three-ball to slice the Saint Rose lead to four points. Saint Rose went on a 7-0 run before Smith hit a three that bounced around the rim before falling through. The Golden Knights answered with a three on the other end to tie their largest lead of the game at 11 points.
  • Smith hit her second three-pointer of the game, unassisted, before Pergola also put in a shot from far range two New Haven possessions later. Pergola scored on a layup again just a minute later assisted by Aliyah Christy (Stratford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas), putting her at her fourth-straight game in double digit point totals with 11.
  • Saint Rose's Ashley Vanderwall scored on a jump shot with under a minute left in the first half to lock the 50-40 score in favor of the Golden Knights halfway through.  
 
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Saint Rose outscored the Chargers in the third straight quarter, only 14-13. Vanderwall scored nine of Saint Roses's 14 points, while Oge and Pergola each led the offense for New Haven with four points each.
  • New Haven began chipping into Saint Rose's lead, starting off with a 6-2 run to bring the Chargers back within seven points. Pergola and Trowell made jumpers in back to back possessions before Oge scored three-straight points to help the score, 47-40 at the end of the third.
 
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • New Haven surged early in the fourth, sailing to an 11-1 run that spanned almost four minutes, holding the Golden Knights without a basket for 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Pergola sparked the run with a fadeaway jumper at 9:52, followed by seven straight points by Kerr that included three field goals in the span to bring the Chargers all the way back within two points.
  • With the clock at 6:15 and Saint Rose with possession, Smith took a Charge and drew the Golden Knight offensive foul, giving New Haven possession, when Wormack drove in for a layup to tie the game for the first time since the 8:11 mark in the first quarter.
  • Over a minute later, Saint Rose had a fastbreak opportunity down the hardwood to tie the score, but Pergola held her composure and came through with a big block to keep the contest tied.
  • With 2:17 remaining, Kerr missed a three-point shot but Wormack got the offensive rebound and went atop the defenders reach for a put-back layup with just over two minutes left to tie the score back up. Smith went for a three-point lead when her shot took two bounces off the rim and spilled off, but Saint Rose came up with the defensive rebound.
  • New Haven and Saint Rose each got wo more points before the fourth quarter buzzer with Oge making a jump shot with 26 seconds to tie the score followed by solid defense on the opposite end, sending the game into overtime with the score at 55-55 for New Haven's second overtime appearance this season.
 
OVERTIME NOTES:
  • Saint Rose scored the first two points with two free throws before Wormack laid in the ball with a hand by Oge before the Golden Knights capped the 6-2 run midway through the extra period.
  • Pergola was fouled and made both of her free throws to put the Chargers within two, but Saint Rose responded with two field goals to put the game slightly out of reach for New Haven.
  • Kerr got the ball in the corner and found the mesh for a three-pointer, but those three points came too late as Saint Rose was able to slide away with the 65-63 overtime victory.
 
New Haven ends its stretch of home games and will now travel to take on the Pace University Setters at the Goldstein Fitness Center in Pleasantville, N.Y.
