PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Junior
Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) shot 50-percent on the night with 13 points, however the University of New Haven women's basketball team was dropped by the Pace University Setters, 55-48 on Tuesday evening at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Oge's 13 points led the scoring for New Haven, while she also pulled down seven total rebounds, two on the offensive glass with two blocks. Junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) finished with 11 points and three steals and sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) had six points, with each of those players pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was among the leader with nine points and also pulled in nine rebounds. Another leader on the boards was senior
Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic), who concluded the game with six rebounds.
As a team, New Haven shot just under 40-percent from the floor, however free throw proved to be costly for the Chargers, only shooting 11-of-25 from the stripe. Pace also limited themselves to 16 turnovers in the game while New Haven committed 29 with pace capitalizing on 26 points off of those turnovers.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven got possession on the tip-off before Kerr got the scoring started right away with a layup.
- Neither teams lead was larger than three points in the first quarter, as Pace led by only three points when senior Quana Smith cut into that lead with a layup at the 2:11 mark to make the score 10-9, Setters.
- Cubbage had a key block with 52 seconds remaining to keep the score tied as Pace made a free throw with 14 seconds left in the first to put the score at 11-9 to end the frame.
- Kerr led with three points in the frame with Oge, Trowell and Smith each contributing with a field goal.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- Oge went off for six points in 1:52 as New Haven got their first lead over the Setters, 15-13 at the 8:23 mark.
- After a 6-2 Pace run, Talley and Wormack made two straight layups to tie the game up again. Pace gained a three-point advantage with the contests first made three-pointer before Wormack made two free throws and Cubbage put in another after being fouled on her own offensive rebound, locking the game up at 24 points each heading into the locker room.
- Oge led at halftime with eight points shooting 4-of-8 from the field, while Wormack followed eight points. Despite only scoring one point in the half, Cubbage came up big on the boards with four rebounds.
- New Haven outscored the Setters in the frame, 15-13 led by Oge's and Wormack's six points.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- Neither team saw an abundance of scoring in the third quarter, as Pace finished atop the Chargers, 10-8.
- Kerr made a layup for two points while Cubbage lit up for four straight points and two late free throws as New Haven got its first lead over the Setters at the 3:44 mark in nearly 11 and a half minutes.
- Turnovers were proved costly in the third quarter as New Haven suffered 10 miscues.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- Oge and Cubbage each made a layup as Pace held a 38-36 lead to start off the final frame. Pace silenced New Haven for almost two minutes, using a 9-0 run to gain a substantial lead over the Chargers.
- Cubbage made a jump shot with the clock at 4:58 before Pace made a three-pointer, extending the Pace lead to 12 points, the largest of the game.
- With just under four minutes left, Oge made a layup assited by Kerr who then followed with four of her own points, forcing Pace to call a time out as New Haven fought back within six points.
- Oge rebounded her own missed free throw for the first basket after the time out, capping a 7-0 run for New Haven.
- After a good Pace free throw to make the score 51-45, a turnover off the inbounding pass gave the Setters possession. Pace made two more free throws before Wormack connected with Smith for the first Charger three-pointer of the game as New Haven trailed by five points with 11 seconds remaining. Kerr went for a three-pointer as time expired, but a successful one would have been too late as Pace slipped away with the 55-48 victory.
The Chargers continue divisional play at Charger Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon with a tilt against the Le Moyne Dolphins. Tip off for the game is set for 1:30 pm, and for fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
