WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior
Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and sophomore
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) combined for 33 points on the day but the University of New Haven dropped the first end of a Northeast-10 Southwest Division game against Le Moyne (5-5, 3-3 NE10) on Saturday afternoon, 65-55.
Wormack's 60-percent shooting and 5-of-6 mark from the free throw line added to a career-high 17 points, while Cubbage scored 16 points on five field goals and five free throws with five rebounds, second on the team. Wormack was also the leader in the rebounding category with nine rebounds, tying her season high for the fourth time this season. She also had one big block, the Chargers lone block, midway through the fourth quarter.
Six other Chargers scored for New Haven in the defeat led by junior
Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) who net eight points with a team-high two three-pointers. Senior
Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) added a team-high three steals on the day out of four total for New Haven.
It was a tight game for a majority of the contest, as the lead changed 14 times with seven ties, as each team led seven times each.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
- Cubbage started off with the hot hand for New Haven, shooting 3-of-4 from the field in the opening four minutes, netting the first seven points for the Chargers.
- Le Moyne went on a 7-3 run before Wormack hit a jump shot and two free throws to close up the quarter with a 14-13 Charger lead.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
- Sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) hit a free throw and Wormack added another jumper assisted by Cubbage as the Chargers capped off a 7-0 run leading into the second stanza.
- Wormack scored two more field goals, the later assisted by freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington), as New Haven had a 21-18 lead midway through the second.
- The Chargers closed out the half with another 7-0 run, sparked by a Cubbage three-pointer assisted by Smith. Kerr put in a free throw, and senior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) added three more points before the Dolphins put in a three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the half, cutting the New Haven lead to 34-31 at halftime.
- Cubbage finished shooting 5-of-9 from the field in the first half with 13 total points, while Wormack also had 13 points by the midway point.
- As a team, New Haven shot 41-percent in the first half on 10-of-24 shots from the field and 13-of-17 from the free throw line.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
- Le Moyne came out of the locker room with fury, using two 9-0 runs broken up by a Smith layup and two Cubbage free throws as Le Moyne reached their largest lead of the game with 31 seconds left in the third.
- Pergola added a late jump shot with Le Moyne leading 46-40 into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
- New Haven got five straight points from Wormack and Cubbage before Le Moyne rattled off ten unanswered points to gain a 15-point edge.
- Kerr scored two-straight three-pointers, but the Dolphin lead was out of range for New Haven who came up short, 65-55.
New Haven moves to 3-6 overall, 1-5 in the NE10 with the defeat. The Chargers will close out its slate of home games for the 2017 season with a non-conference tilt against Chestnut Hill with tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
