Wormack Records First Career Double-Double for Women's Basketball at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) recorded her first career double-double, but the University of New Haven women's basketball team was upended in a defensive battle, 60-41 by the American International Yellow Jackets in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Wednesday night. The Chargers are now 5-15 overall and 4-11 in the NE10.

The game was close through the first five minutes as an Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) jumper pulled New Haven to within 9-6 at the 4:48 mark of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets followed with a 9-0 run, capped by an Alyssa Guyon jumper. The teams played evenly for the next seven minutes as a three-pointer by Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) cut the AIC lead to 27-17 with 1:07 left in the opening half before American International scored the final two buckets heading into intermission.  

AIC scored eight of the first 12 points in the third period before the Chargers battled back at the line, connecting on 7-of-8 free throws in the next three minutes, slicing the lead back to 42-28 with 1:38 left. After two Yellow Jackets baskets, Wormack dropped on an elbow jumper, followed by an AIC turnover and a layup by Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) to end the period. They Yellow Jackets were able to maintain the lead in the fourth, in part to a strong performance at the line.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wormack logged her first double-double behind 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two steals and a block while going 4-for-6 from the field.
  • New Haven went 11-for-12 from the free throw line, its third time this season shooting better than 90 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Kerr had nine points while Trowell and Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) scored six each.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

  • A New Haven basket by Kerr pulled the Chargers to within three points at 9-6 before the Yellow Jackets scored the final seven points of the period to take a 16-6 advantage at the end of the quarter.
  • Kerr led New Haven with four points and two rebounds.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

  • The two teams played an even quarter for the first nine minutes as a three-pointer from Trowell cut the AIC lead to 27-17 with 1:07 left in the quarter before the Yellow Jackets scored the final two baskets of the half to take a 31-17 lead into the locker room.
  • Wormack had four rebounds, two steals and a block in the period.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

  • New Haven shot 7-for-8 at the line in the quarter, helping them to play at an even pace with AIC.
  • Wormack scored six of her points and grabbed three rebounds, going 3-for-3 from the floor.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

  • Kerr hit her only three-pointer of the period, giving her five straight games with a trey.
  • With 28 seconds left in the game, Wormack pulled in an offensive rebound and was fouled. She hit on both shots from the line to complete the double-double.

New Haven returns home to take on the Saint Rose Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference game for its annual Play4Kay day on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tipoff from Charger Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
