Chargers Drop Road Decision at Adelphi 65-52

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sophomores Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) combined to lead the New Haven women's basketball team (6-17 overall, 4-13 NE10) in a 65-52 road loss at No. 14 Adelphi on Saturday afternoon. Oge led six scorers for the Chargers with 14 points, while Kerr contributed 13.

Oge's 14 points came on a 6-of-11 effort from the field, while she also added a pair of points from the free throw line. Joining the pair in the scoring column was junior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) and Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) who finished with eight and seven points, respectively, and freshman Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) who chipped in a half dozen. Wormack's six points came on a 50-percent shooting effort as she finished the game 3-of-6 from the field.

As a team, New Haven shot 35.3 percent overall, making 18-of-51 field goal attempts. The best shooting of the day came in the second half where she connected on 11-of-25 attempts for 44 percent. Overall for the game, the Chargers finished with a pair of free throws, while benefiting from 18 total trips to the free throw line by scoring 14 of those attempts.

Overall for the game, the Blue and Gold finished with 33 rebounds, led by Trowell and Smith who each pulled down six boards. New Haven also combined for 13 offensive rebounds, turning those into a dozen second chance points.

FIRST HALF NOTES

·         Adelphi jumped out to an early 8-1 start, however sophomore guard Kerr ended the early New Haven drought with the Blue and Gold's first basket of the game as she drove the baseline for the layup.

·         Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) closed the opening quarter with a coast-to-coast trip pulling down an offensive board and converting her first points of the game on a layup as time expired, providing an 18-10 margin at the first intermission.

·         Oge led the Chargers in the opening quarter, collecting half of the Chargers 10 first quarter points, shooting 2-of-3 from the field and converting on one of two free throw attempts.

·         Facing a 10 point deficit early in the second quarter, freshman Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) came off the bench and rattled off four straight points as she was perfect at the line on a pair of trips. Those four points cut the Adelphi Lead to 22-16.

·         Defensively, the Chargers held Adelphi without a point over the final 2:34 of the opening half while cutting the Panthers advantage at the break to 11 points, 33-22. Trowell would score the final four points of the half for New Haven connecting on a layup with 79 seconds remaining and sinking a pair of free throws with under a second remaining before the intermission.

·         Oge added to her first quarter scoring lead to enter the halftime intermission leading the Chargers with seven points. She continued her shooting success, making 3-of-5 field goal attempts.

·         As a team, the Charger finished the opening half shooting 26.9 percent, making 7-of-26 attempts from the field, while unable to convert from beyond the three point arc on 10 attempts. New Haven did take advantage of the Panthers aggressive defense, earning 10 trips to the free throw line, converting eight of those trips.

·         New Haven did hold a 19-17 lead in the battle of the boards at the break, with eight different players pulling down at least one rebound in the half. Leading the Chargers was Smith and Trowell who each finished with four. Eight of the Chargers 19 first half rebounds came on the offensive glass, with New Haven turning those into eight points while the Panthers finished without any second chance points.

SECOND HALF NOTES

·         Trowell continued her first half ending scoring run by netting the Chargers first four points in the third quarter, all of which came at the free throw line.

·         After being held without a field goal over the first five minutes of the third quarter, Wormack came off the bench to break that drought and score her first bucket of the game with 4:42 remaining in the third. That basket was the first of three over the next two minutes as the Chargers increased the tempo. The final of those three hoops for New Haven was the first of the game from outside the three point arc which came from Smith.

·         That layup for Wormack also began a quarter ending streak with the Chargers scoring nine of the final 12 points in the frame, decreasing their deficit to 10 at the intermission, 47-37. Within those nine points, Wormack and Kerr each finished with a pair of buckets.

·         After being held without a basket over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Kerr stepped in to break the drought and complete an old fashioned three point play pushing her into double figures for the game and the 18th time this season.

·         That three-point play for Kerr began a streak for the Blue and Gold where they scored 10 of the next 12 points, cutting the Panthers lead back to 12. The final five points in that run all came from Oge, including back-to-back layups, with all five of her points in that run coming over a 44 second stretch.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

·         Kerr closed out her 51st career game with 13 points, her 18th game of the season in double figures and the 27th of her career.

·         The 14 points for Oge is her sixth game of the season scoring in double figures and follows up the first 20-plus game of her career last time out against STAC. Over those two games, Oge is shooting 57.7 percent from the field on 15-of-26.

·         Oge also finished with one block for the Chargers, the 20th game this season that she has finished with at least one put back.
