Oge Scores Career-High 21 Points to Propel Chargers Past Spartans

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Allieyah Cubbage (North Plainfield, N.J./Roselle Catholic) each recorded a double-double as the University of New Haven women's basketball team downed the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans 61-47 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night. The Chargers are 6-16 on the season.

The Spartans led by a point midway through the first quarter before New Haven went on a 10-1 run in the span of 2:50 to take a 18-10 lead as the first quarter came to a close. An even second period allowed the Blue and Gold to take a 31-24 lead at halftime.

After New Haven netted the first basket of the third quarter, STAC went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to three at 35-32 with 5:01 remaining in the frame. The Chargers responded, going on an extended spurt, scoring 17 of the next 20 points while holding the Spartans to 1-of-12 shooting during the span, opening up their largest lead of the night at 52-35 with 4:31 left in the fourth, maintaining a double figure lead through the end of the game.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Oge had her second double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, helping the Blue and Gold to a 44-18 advantage in points in the paint.
  • Cubbage had her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
  • Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) scored nine points and had a season-high seven rebounds.
  • New Haven outrebounded Saint Thomas Aquinas 52-41.
  • Each of the Chargers wins this season have been by 10 or more points.

FIRST PERIOD NOTES

  • Trailing 9-8 at the 3:49 mark, an Oge layup sparked a 10-1 run to close the period. The sophomore also capped the spurt with an old-fashioned three-point play.
  • Oge scored nine points in the frame.
  • Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored all seven of her points in the opening 10 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD NOTES

  • The Spartans opened the period on a 9-2 run, forcing three New Haven turnovers to cut the lead to 20-19 with 5:49 left in the quarter.
  • The Chargers responded with a 10-3 swing of their own, matching their largest lead of the half at 30-22 with 1:31 left.
  • Trowell and Cubbage led the way with five points each.

THIRD PERIOD NOTES

  • The game tightened once again in the first five minutes of the stanza as New Haven saw its lead sliced to 35-32 on a pair of Kaitlyn McCue free throws with 5:01 remaining.
  • The Blue and Gold quickly reestablished a double digit lead thanks to a pair of baskets by Oge and three-pointer from Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston).
  • The Chargers held the Spartans to 2-for-14 shooting in the period.

FOURTH PERIOD NOTES

  • New Haven opened the period on a 10-0 run to take a 52-35 lead with 4:31 remaining. Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) paced the Chargers during the span with four points.
  • Oge and Smith each scored six points in the period.
  • The Blue and Gold shot 8-for-15 in the frame and outscored Saint Thomas Aquinas 16-0 in the paint.
