Game Recap: Softball |

Schiebe, Stonebraker Lead Softball to Doubleheader Split

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y.Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) hit a two-run homer and Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) struck out a career-high 10 batters as the University of New Haven softball team took game two of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader 4-1 against the Pace Setters on Tuesday afternoon. Pace won game one 6-3.

Trailing 2-0 in the opener, the Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, keyed by a bases loaded, two-run single from Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge), putting New Haven on top. Pace responded in the fourth with three runs of its own and one in the sixth to cement the final score.

In the second game, the Blue and Gold took a 2-0 lead in the second as Schiebe clocked her first homer of the season, a two-run blast. In the fourth, Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) tripled with runners on first and second to put the Chargers up 4-0. In the circle, Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) was excellent, allowing just an unearned run in the fourth inning, striking out a career-best 10 batters en route to her sixth complete game of the year.

Luzzi, Schiebe and Vaughan each had two RBI during the twinbill for the Chargers.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing 2-0, New Haven scored three runs in the third with the benefit of just one hit. Three straight walks to Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic), Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) and Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) loaded the bases for Vaughan, who singled down the leftfield line, scoring two runs, knotting the game at 2-2. A sac fly by Devlin plated Whitlock, giving the Blue and Gold a 3-2 edge.
  • Pace scored three times in the fourth and once in the sixth to come away with the win.
  • Alyssa Monteverde (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) pitched 3.1 innings in relief, surrendering just one run on two hits.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scoreless into the top of the second, Liptack led off with a single to center following a 12-pitch at-bat. Schiebe came up next and hit her first homerun since her freshman season to put New Haven up 2-0.
  • The Chargers doubled the lead in the fourth when DeLeo walked and Vaughan singled in front of Luzzi who tripled down the rightfield line, scoring both runners for a 4-0 lead.
  • Stonebraker took care of the rest, striking out a career-high 10 batters as she improved her record to 7-4. She allowed two hits and walked two in delivering her sixth complete game of the season.
