WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team got strong pitching in both ends of a doubleheader as the Chargers split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division twinbill with the American International College Yellow Jackets on Friday afternoon, dropping the opener 1-0 before winning the later contest 5-2.
Pitching was the key for both teams in game one as both Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Sarah Beliveau allowed just two hits and no earned runs. AIC got the lone tally of the game in the third inning on a throwing error off a fly ball allowing Yami Lopez-Perez to come in from third.
In the second game, New Haven continued to pitch well as Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) won her eighth contest of the year with her fourth consecutive complete game. The Blue and Gold tallied single runs in the second and third and three in the fourth to provide the offense.
Offensively for the day, Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) led the Chargers with three hits.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Yellow Jackets scored the only run of the game in the third inning as on a shallow fly ball to right, a throw to the plate to prevent Lopez-Perez from tagging up sailed over the head of the catcher, allowing the runner to score.
- Each team had just two hits in the game.
- Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) delivered her 12th complete game of the year, tied for second most in the NE10, allowing no earned runs and striking out one.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Chargers struck first as singles from Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and Alycia Marsello (North Kingstown, R.I/Prout) put runners on first and second with one out. After a flyout moved DeLeo to third, Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) singled through the right side, scoring the runner for a 1-0 lead.
- New Haven added to the lead in the third as a sac fly from Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scored Whitlock, who had singled, moved to second on a Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) single and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
- Three more runs came across in the third as a sac fly by Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) and RBI singles by Whitlock and Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) helped to extend the lead to 5-0.
- Stonebraker authored her fourth consecutive complete game allowing two runs on five hits, striking out six.
- Whitlock, Luzzi, Schiebe and Marsello each had two hits in the game.
