Baseball Storms Back to Win Extra Inning Thriller

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven baseball team rallied from five runs down in the eighth inning before winning a thrilling 11-inning Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest, 11-9 against the Pace Setters on Wednesday afternoon.

Down 6-1 entering the eighth inning, the Chargers scored three times, keyed by a Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) homer and a two-run single by Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) to cut the lead to 6-4. New Haven scored three more times in the ninth, taking a 7-6 lead on a Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) bases loaded sac fly.

Pace tied the game in the bottom of the frame to force the Blue and Gold into its third consecutive extra inning contest. After a scoreless 10th, the Chargers erupted for four runs in the 11th with the benefit of just one hit as four walks and a hit batsman led to the rally. The Setters didn't go quietly, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame, but Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) got a groundout and a strikeout to end it for his third win of the season.

Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) led New Haven with three hits while Perrelli and Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) each had two. Perrelli, Walraven and Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) each drove in two runs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • After Pace scored twice in the first inning to take the early lead, Garcia went deep for the second straight game to cut the edge to 2-1.
  • The Setters built their lead with two runs each in the third and fifth innings.
  • In the eighth, Walraven inched New Haven closer with his third homerun of the year, making it 6-2. Following the long ball, Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) was hit by a pitch and Petrillo walked before moving to second and third on a wild pitch. Perrelli drove both runners home with a single to right, slicing the lead to a pair of runs.
  • The ninth inning rally started with one out as PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) tripled with Walraven walking behind him. Russo came through with an RBI single to center, bringing home Contreras and moving Walraven to second. Petrillo followed with a single to right. The outfielder bobbled the ball allowing Walraven to score and Russo and Petrillo to move to third and second respectively. After Perrelli was intentionally walked to set up the double play, Zagaja lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Russo, giving New Haven a 7-6 lead.
  • Pace answered in the bottom of the stanza, as a John Kukura homer tied the game at 7-7, forcing extra innings.
  • Starting the 11th, Zagaja singled and Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) walked. Billy Huber (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) laid down a sac bunt, but reached first as the infielder attempted, unsuccessfully, to get the lead runner at third. Contreras was then hit by a pitch to put the Chargers on top 8-7.
  • With the bases still loaded, walks to Walraven and Russo forced in two more runs before a sac fly by Petrillo capped the scoring in the frame.
  • The Setters scored twice in the bottom of the 11th before Caico got Cory Capaldi to ground out and Garrett De Lotto to strike out, ending the game.
