Softball Sweeps AIC with a Pair of Shutouts

WEST HAVEN, Conn.Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) each pitched a complete game shutout and four players had multi-hit days as the University of New Haven softball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from the American International Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon by scored of 6-0 and 4-0.

In the opener, New Haven put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as Butts did the rest, allowing two hits and striking out three. She did not allow a baserunner until the fifth and took a no-hit bid into the sixth. The Chargers added two more runs in the fourth and single tallies in the fifth and sixth to seal the game.

The second game was scoreless into the third when a Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) sac fly gave Stonebraker all the offense she needed on the day. The freshman pitched her fifth straight complete game, allowing three hits and striking out seven. The Yellow Jackets had only one runner reach third base on the day, but Stonebraker worked out of it, getting Lydia DePina to ground into a fielder's choice, ending the fourth inning.

Offensively, Whitlock, Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) and Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) each had three hits in the twinbill with Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) delivering two including her first career homerun in game one.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Haven scored twice in the first inning as with one out, three straight singles by Whitlock, Luzzi and Devlin plated a run and had players on the corners. On the first pitch to Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), Devlin broke on a stolen base attempt. The throw from the catcher came through to second allowing Luzzi to come home from third, making it 2-0.
  • In the fourth, the Blue and Gold loaded the bases on walks to Alycia Marsello (North Kingstown, R.I/Prout), Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge). Luzzi came up and deposited a single into left, scoring two runs and pushing the lead to 4-0.
  • The Chargers added to the lead in the fifth on Colby's first career homer, which cleared the wall in left. They plated the final run of the game in the sixth when Whitlock doubled driving in a runner that reached on a walk.
  • Butts was outstanding in the circle, retiring the first 12 batters of the game and not allowing a hit until the sixth. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Blue and Gold broke a scoreless tie in the third as Errera doubled to center and moved to third on an error before Whitlock lifted a sac fly to bring the initial run of the game across the plate.
  • New Haven scored three unearned runs in the fourth, loading the bases as singles by Devlin and Schiebe sandwiched a walk to Colby. After a groundout cut the first runner down at the plate, Marsello bounced a ball back to the circle. The throw to the plate to get the lead runner was bobbled by the catcher and rolled to the backstop allowing two runs to score. Whitlock brought the final run of the inning home with an RBI single.
  • Stonebraker tossed her fifth consecutive complete game and second shutout of the season, fanning seven.
