NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team blanked the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 12-0 in six innings to open a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader before rain suspended the nightcap with the Chargers leading 5-1 heading to the third inning. The game will be continued at the New Haven Softball Field as part of a doubleheader on April 25.
In the opener, the Chargers jumped on the board with a run in the second and extended the lead on a two-run Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) homer in the third. Luzzi had three hits and three RBI in the game and Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) picked up her league leading 13th win of the season, her 14th complete game and fourth shutout of the year.
The nightcap saw New Haven take an early lead with two runs in the first. SCSU battled back with a run in the bottom of the inning before the Blue and Gold tallied three more times in the second. The two teams saw play halted as the rain intensified, not allowing the game to continue.
