No. 23 Softball Drops Heartbreaker to Le Moyne in Regular Season Finale

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) had two hits and Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) drove in two runs, but the No. 23 University of New Haven softball team dropped a heartbreaker, 4-3 to the Le Moyne Dolphins on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division regular season finale for both teams.

The Chargers fired the opening salvo of the game with a pair of first inning runs. After the Dolphins scored a single tally in the bottom of the inning, neither team crossed the plate again until the sixth when the Blue and Gold plated one more to take a 3-1 lead. The Dolphins had the final say, however, scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh to come away with the win.

For the game, Schiebe had two hits including an RBI double and Colby drove in the pair of first inning runs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Haven jumped out quickly, scoring two in the top of the first. Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) singled and stole second. Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) followed two batters later with a single and moved to second on the throw. Colby came up and singled through the middle to plate both runners.
  • Le Moyne responded in the bottom of the inning as a Kelly Mascari single scored Courtney Case.
  • From that point, both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the sixth when Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) singled and stole second, followed by a Colby. Three batters later, Schiebe doubled, plating Devlin. On the play, pinch-runner Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) was thrown out at the plate also trying to score.
  • In the seventh, the Chargers got the first out of the inning before two singles and a triple tied the game. Lauren Zazzaro came up and singled to short, scoring Jillian McManus with the game-winning run.
