WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team got a third consecutive well pitched game and scored the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Chargers completed a three-game Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division sweep of the Adelphi Panthers with a 1-0 win on Monday afternoon.
Â
Both starting pitchers were outstanding as
Mike Schettino (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and Ed Baram each delivered seven shutout innings of work. Schettino allowed just three hits and walked one in his best start of the season, matching a career-long outing.
Â
After
Josh Walker (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) kept the Panthers off the board in the top of the eighth, the New Haven offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. With one out,
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) walked.
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) stood in next and the Blue and Gold executed a perfect hit and run as Walraven bounced a ball through the hole vacated by the infielder covering second base. On the play the ball was bobbled in centerfield, allowing Chamberlain to make it all the way home to give New Haven a 1-0 lead.
Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School / Maine) shut the door in the ninth, striking out two batters for his fourth save of the season.
Â
Walker (2-0) got the win, pitching a scoreless eighth inning, working around a one-out walk.
Â
The Chargers are in action next on Wednesday, April 5 when they face cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State in an NE10 Southwest Division matchup. First pitch from Vieira Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
