Baseball Sweeps Southwest Division DH from Le Moyne

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team received standout starting pitching and some clutch work out of the bullpen as the Chargers swept a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader from the Le Moyne Dolphins on Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-0 and 2-1.

In the opener, the Chargers jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) clocked a three-run homer over the leftfield wall to give the home team the early lead. The game remained 3-0 until the sixth when New Haven plated two more runs. Solid starting pitching from Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) and strong relief work from Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School / Maine) helped the offense stand up for the victory.

The Blue and Gold got on the board first in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) pitched effectively for the Chargers, surrendering just one run through six innings of work. The trio of Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School), Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Josh Walker (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen with Walker getting the final four batters in order for his second save.

Overall, Zagaja led the Chargers on offense with three hits while Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) each had two.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Haven jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as after Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) reached on an error and Perrelli single, Zagaja clubbed his fourth homer of the year, a towering shot to left.
  • Neither team scored again until the sixth when Petrillo singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by Perrelli before Zagaja followed with a walk. With Caico at the plate, the Chargers executed a double steal. On the throw, the ball skipped into leftfield, allowing Petrillo to score and advancing Zagaja to third. Caico capitalized, lacing a ball inside the first base line, scoring Zagaja to put New Haven up 5-0.
  • The run support was plenty for Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) who delivered seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. The only trouble he ran into was in the seventh when the Dolphins put runners on first and second with one out, but Kennedy got Gabe Levanti to fly out and Josiah Gray to strike out swinging to end the inning. The bullpen came in to do its job behind the starter as LaManna and Croce each authored a scoreless inning to secure the victory.
  • For the game, Zagaja and Caico each had two hits with Zagaja driving in three runs.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Haven kept the game scoreless in the third as after Le Moyne put runners on second and third with one out, Aprea got Brian Cox to strike out and Ben Walsh to ground out to shortstop, ending the inning.
  • The Blue and Gold responded in the bottom of the inning as Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) walked and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) reached on a bunt to open the frame. After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, a groundout by Petrillo drove in Chamberlain. Perrelli followed with a single and Zagaja doubled behind him to bring Walraven home for a 2-0 lead.
  • Le Moyne cracked the scoreboard in the sixth when with runners on the corners, a groundout scored Walsh, slicing the lead to 2-1.
  • The Dolphins threatened in both the seventh and eighth, putting a runner in scoring position in each frame, but New Haven was able to maintain the lead.
  • Walker came on and recorded the final out of the eighth and set Le Moyne down in order in the ninth for his second save.
