Butts Tosses 12-Inning Complete Game as Softball Drops Heartbreaker to Pace

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) went the distance in a 12-inning complete game, but the University of New Haven softball team dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the Pace Setters in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Wednesday afternoon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to impending darkness and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Pace on April 11.

Offense was at a premium in regulation as the Setters scored single runs in the first and the fourth with the Chargers scoring in the third. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) lifted a sac fly to center, scoring pinch-runner Madison Derosia (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) to tie the game at 2-2. The teams traded runs in the 11th before Pace scored twice in the top of the 12th. The Chargers climbed back to a 5-4, but were unable to bring the tying run across in the bottom of the inning.

Megan Butts (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) went the distance for the Blue and Gold in the circle, allowing three earned runs and three hits.

For the Chargers, DeLeo went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pace scored a run in the top of the first inning on a walk, wild pitch and two groundouts.
  • The Chargers responded in the third as DeLeo doubled to lead off the inning. Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) followed suit two batters later to plate DeLeo.
  • The Setters scored in the top of the fourth and took that 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) led off with a ringing double off the centerfield wall. Madision Derosia came in to pinch run and was sacrificed to third by Erin Stever (Parish, N.Y./Altmar Parish Williamstown). DeLeo came up and hit a sac fly, scoring Derosia to tie the game.
  • The two squads traded runs in the 11th inning with New Haven getting its tally on a fielder's choice from Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill), bringing in Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) who was placed on second base to start the inning under international tiebreaker rules.
  • After Pace scored two runs in the top of the 12th, the Blue and Gold rallied in the bottom of the inning. With Schiebe on second, Stever and DeLeo were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) hit a sac fly to close the gap to 5-4, but the Chargers could not bring the tying run in to score.
  • DeLeo, Vaughan and Schiebe each had a double for New Haven.
  • Butts went the distance for her 10th complete game in 11 starts. She allowed three earned runs and struck out a career-high seven batters.
