SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge) drove in eight runs combined in during a doubleheader as the University of New Haven softball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference twinbill form the Assumption Greyhounds, winning game one 10-3 before taking the second contest 9-1in five innings at Conaty Park on the campus of Bryant University on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, New Haven jumped out to a 9-1 lead through three innings as the Blue and Gold scored one in the first and four each in the second and third. Vaughan and Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) each had three hits in the game with Vaughan driving in four while Luzzi had three RBI. Overall, the Chargers had 15 hits in the game.
The second game saw a continuation of the offense as New Haven scored eight times in the first as the Blue and Gold coasted to the win. Vaughan added four more RBI in the second contest and Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) tossed a complete game in the circle, striking out six.
Overall for New Haven, Vaughan went 5-for-8 with a homer, three doubles and knocked in eight.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Chargers jumped out in the top of the first inning with Luzzi on second and Marissa Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) on first, Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) doubled, plating Luzzi for a 1-0 lead.
- After the Greyhounds tied it with a run in the bottom of the first, New Haven exploded for four in the second. With one out, Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) singled and moved to second on a groundout. Vaughan singled to plate DeLeo. Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) followed with a single to put runners on first and second for Luzzi who scored two with a double, extending the lead to 4-1. Colby came up next and singled home Luzzi for a 5-1 lead.
- With one out in the third, Erin Stever (Parish, N.Y./Altmar Parish Williamstown) doubled before DeLeo coming up with an infield single behind her. A groundout moved both runners up for Vaughan who promptly doubled home a pair of runs, making it 7-1. Devlin came up next and tripled, scoring Vaughan for an 8-1 lead. Luzzi capped the scoring for the frame with a single, plating Devlin.
- Assumption kept the game alive with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The teams traded seventh innimg runs with the Blue and Gold getting its tally as Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) reached on an error before Vaughan doubled her home.
- Butts picked up both her 11th win and 11th complete game of the season allowing three runs on six hits, striking out two.
- For the game, Vaughan and Luzzi each had three hits, driving in four and three respectively. Â
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- New Haven jumped out in a big way in the top of the first as after a Luzzi walk and stolen base, Colby singled her home for a 1-0 lead. Singles by Schiebe and Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) loaded the bases for Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) who delivered a two-run base knock. DeLeo then walked in front of Whitlock who reached on an error, plating two more runs for a 5-0 Chargers advantage. Not done yet, Vaughan stepped up and cracked her fourth homer of the season, extending the lead to 8-0.
- Vaughan added to her RBI total in the fifth when she doubled, scoring DeLeo who had been hit by a pitch.
- Stonebraker picked up her fifth win of the season, striking out six while scattering six hits.
