Game Recap: Softball |

Long Ball Wins Game One, Pitching Wins Game Two as Softball Sweeps Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The University of New Haven softball team hit four homeruns in the first game of a doubleheader and won a pitchers' duel in game two as the Chargers swept a Northeast-10 Conference twinbill from the Merrimack Warriors, winning game one 8-7 before taking the second contest 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game, nearly all the New Haven offense came via the long ball as Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Sierra Whitlock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), Taylor Luzzi (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) all went deep. Trailing 5-3 in the sixth, Luzzi homered to tie the game. After a pair of runs for Merrimack in the bottom of the inning, a three-run homer by Devlin propelled the Blue and Gold to the win.

Game two saw the squads combine for just six hits and one earned run. After New Haven scored in the third, the Warriors tallied an unearned run in the fourth to tie the game. The Chargers picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth when Luzzi scored on an error. Merrimack put the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue and Gold shut the door as Kylie Stonebraker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis High School) got a fly out to end the game.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chargers jumped on the board with the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Liptack drove out her first homerun of the season for a 1-0 lead.
  • After Merrimack took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, New Haven tied it in the next inning when Whitlock went deep for the third time this season.
  • The Warriors took a 5-2 lead with a run in the third and two in the fourth.
  • The Blue and Gold cut the lead back down to 5-3 in the top of the fifth when Erin Stever (Parish, N.Y./Altmar Parish Williamstown) singled with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a hit from Catherine Vaughan (Commack, N.Y./Hauppauge).
  • New Haven battled back to tie the game in the sixth as Devlin led off with a walk followed by Luzzi, who hit her third homerun of the season, knotting the score at 5-5. The Warriors tallied two more times in the bottom of the inning, taking a 7-5 lead into the final frame.
  • In the seventh, Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) led off with a single and Stever reached on an error, bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate. After a groundout and a strikeout, Devlin stepped in and cracked her second homer of the season to put the Chargers up 8-7.
  • Alyssa Monteverde (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) (3-0) got the win, pitching the Blue and Gold out of a jam in the sixth. Stonebraker worked through a couple of walks in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her first save of the season.
  • Seven different Chargers had a hit, four of them homeruns.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scoreless into the third, New Haven broke the ice when with two outs, Samantha Errera (Sweetwater, N.J./Cedar Creek) walked and stole second. Vaughan followed with a walk in front of Whitlock who doubled to plate Errera.
  • Merrimack scored an unearned run in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1.
  • In the sixth, Luzzi singled with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error. Two batters later Alexandria Cunkle (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) reached on an error that allowed Luzzi to score, putting the Blue and Gold up 2-1.
  • The Chargers had to work out of trouble in the seventh as the leadoff batter reached on a walk and moved all the way to third with two outs before Tamarra Crowe flied out to left to end the game.
  • Stonebraker (6-4) pitched her fifth complete game of the season allowing no earned runs on two hits, striking out four.
