Palmer Ties Career-High with 10 Strikeouts in Tough Luck Loss Against STAC

MANCHESTER, N.H. – David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts, but the No. 21 University of New Haven baseball team allowed three seventh inning runs as the Chargers fell to the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans 4-1 in their second game of the NCAA Division II East Region Championship.

The Blue and Gold jumped on the board in the first inning as Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) singled and moved to third on a sac bunt and an error before a Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) sac fly brought him in. New Haven had chances in the second and third, but was unable to scratch anything further on the board. STAC threatened a couple of times, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, but Palmer struck out the final two batters of the inning to work out of the frame. The Spartans broke through in the seventh, scoring three times to take the lead.

Palmer allowed two earned runs in 6.2 innings. He has now struck out 29 batters in 21.2 innings in the postseason.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chargers took advantage of an early opportunity as Chamberlain singled off the third base bag to open the first before Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) moved him up with a sacrifice. On the bunt, the STAC pitcher threw the ball past first base, allowing both runners to move up. Petrillo lifted a sac fly to left, plating Chamberlain with the first run of the game.
  • Defense helped the Blue and Gold maintain the lead in the top of the next inning as with a runner on second following an error and two outs, Greg Dawber singled through the right side. Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) came up firing in rightfield and was able to throw out Anthony Shkrelja trying to score.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Spartans had their best offensive opportunity of the game to that point as STAC loaded the bases with one out. David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) bore down and was able to get East Region home run leader Giovanni Dingcong to swing and miss at a 3-2 pitch for the second out of the frame before freezing Michael Morgan with a 2-2 breaking ball on the inside corner to escape the inning.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas pushed across a trio of runs in the seventh, taking a 3-1 lead.
  • The Blue and Gold had a chance in the bottom of the eighth as with one out, Chamberlain walked and Walraven singled. Petrillo hit a ball that looked ticketed for center, but the Spartans pitcher was able to deflect the ball at the last moment to his shortstop who was able to step on second base and fire to first to end the inning.
