Chamberlain, Walraven Combine for Eight Hits in Win at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) combined for eight hits as the University of New Haven baseball team clinched a home game in the First Round of next week's Northeast-10 Championship with a 10-2 victory against the American International Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers got off to a hot start, opening a 5-0 lead through their first two trips to the plate with Walraven driving three of the runs. After AIC scored twice in the bottom of the second, New Haven responded with a run in the fourth. Neither team scored again until the ninth when the Chargers plated four runs on a pair of two-run homers from Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) to seal the victory.

Chamberlain and Walraven each had four hits on the day with Chamberlain scoring three times and Walraven knocking four.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Opening the game, Chamberlain singled up the middle in front of Walraven who clocked his fourth homer of the season, putting the Chargers up 2-0 just six pitches into the contest.
  • Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) led off the second with a walk and moved to second on a PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) single before a hit from Chamberlain loaded the bases. Walraven came through once again with an infield single to plate Garcia. On the play the shortstop threw wide of first base allowing Contreras to score and moving Chamberlain to third. Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) followed with a sac fly bringing home the final run of the inning to put the Blue and Gold up 5-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets got two of the runs back in the bottom of the frame on a bases loaded walk and a sac fly.
  • In the fourth, the top of the order worked its magic again when Chamberlain singled and later advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Walraven knocked in his fourth run of the day on a sac fly, putting New Haven up 6-2.
  • From there the pitching took over as neither team scored again until the ninth when Walraven collected his fourth hit of the day, a bunt single in front of Perrelli who homered, extending the lead to 8-2. Two batters later, Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) doubled to bring up Garcia who smacked his fourth homer of the year.
  • Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) ran his record to 6-0 tossing six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out seven.
  • Josh Walker (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School / Maine) finished the game off with three shutout innings, retiring nine of the 11 batters they faced with four strikeouts.
