LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team launched its 2017 season with a non-conference win on Friday afternoon, blanking the Georgian Court Golden Lions 1-0 at the GCU Track and Field Complex.
Both teams battled back and forth for nearly the entire first half, but the Chargers were able to jump out in front with 29 seconds remaining in the first frame as senior
Allison Morgan (Raritan, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) booted a laser over the keeper's head from 20 yards out. Morgan's goal, the Chargers first of the season, was able to give New Haven the 1-0 advantage just before the halftime break.
The defense stepped up and shut down the Golden Lions attack the rest of the way. Junior goalkeeper
Kyra Wolonsavich (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) made seven saves on the afternoon, two of them coming within two minutes of each other in the second half to record her first career clean sheet.
Georgian Court threatened with a late corner kick and two shots within the last ten minutes, but the Chargers were able to hold on and grasp the 1-0 win.
After a few days off from action, New Haven (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NE10) will return to the pitch for another non-conference match against Queens for the 2017 home opener at Kayo Field with a 4:00 pm opening kick.
