WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven Women's Tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision on the road at No. 6 Stonehill College at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex on Tuesday. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 1-5 on the season.
Freshmen Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) battled for the Chargers at first doubles, before falling by an 8-4 decision. In singles play, Gonzalez put up a fight at first singles pushing the opening set into a tiebreaker before dropping that set by a 7-6 (7-1) decision and the match with a 6-0 decision in the second set.
Sophomore Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) posted the only set win on the afternoon for the Chargers, that coming in sixth singles. After falling by a 6-1 margin in set one, Clyne battled to a 6-4 victory to know the set at 1-1, before dropping the point by a 10-7 final against Stonehill's Janet Haas.
New Haven will cap off a four-game road swing with a Sunday (Sept. 24) afternoon matinee against the Saint Anselm Hawks. Opening service from the Saint Anselm Tennis Courts is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
