Burridge Records Two Wins to Lead Women's Tennis to Season's First NE10 Victory

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. –
The University of New Haven women's tennis team enjoyed their first Northeast-10 conference win on Sunday afternoon, edging out the Saint Anselm Hawks on their home courts with a 5-4 score. New Haven's win against Saint Anselm comes as the first since the spring 2014 season when the Chargers won the match, 7-2.

Junior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) led the Chargers with two wins on the day, first defeating Kayla Hodas and Eleni Petromelis with sophomore Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) in third doubles by an 8-4 score. Burridge also cruised to a straight set victory at No. 4 singles over Meg Golden, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) also claimed a win for New Haven, taking down opponent Tess Malerbi, 6-4 and 6-1 for her third singles win of her collegiate career. Sophomore Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) breezed to a victory at No. 6 singles, only giving up one set on the afternoon in a 6-1, 6-0 match.

Sophomore Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) capped off the win for New Haven at No. 5 singles, winning the firset set by a score of 6-3. After being down in the second set, 4-5, Mercurio rallied for three-straight games to run away with the 7-5 singles victory, and ultimately score the final point needed for New Haven to win the match.

The Chargers look for another big NE10 victory on their home courts against American International on Saturday, September 30th. First serve is set for 10:00 am.
