MANCHESTER, N.H. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team enjoyed their first Northeast-10 conference win on Sunday afternoon, edging out the Saint Anselm Hawks on their home courts with a 5-4 score. New Haven's win against Saint Anselm comes as the first since the spring 2014 season when the Chargers won the match, 7-2.
Junior
Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) led the Chargers with two wins on the day, first defeating Kayla Hodas and Eleni Petromelis with sophomore
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) in third doubles by an 8-4 score. Burridge also cruised to a straight set victory at No. 4 singles over Meg Golden, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) also claimed a win for New Haven, taking down opponent Tess Malerbi, 6-4 and 6-1 for her third singles win of her collegiate career. Sophomore
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) breezed to a victory at No. 6 singles, only giving up one set on the afternoon in a 6-1, 6-0 match.
Sophomore
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) capped off the win for New Haven at No. 5 singles, winning the firset set by a score of 6-3. After being down in the second set, 4-5, Mercurio rallied for three-straight games to run away with the 7-5 singles victory, and ultimately score the final point needed for New Haven to win the match.
