Chlebowski Makes History, Fires Field Hockey's First Ever Goal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Maecy Chlebowski (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) made history for the University of New Haven Field Hockey team on Saturday afternoon, firing home the Chargers first goal in program history at American International in a 7-1 setback at Abdow Field.

New Haven held the Yellow Jackets to only two goals in the first half with freshman Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) making nine saves in the first frame.

American International came out of the locker room hot, scoring four goals in the first fifteen minutes to extend their lead to 6-0. New Haven picked up momentum in the 62nd minute when the Chargers caused a penalty corner and followed that up with a quick shot by sophomore Ashley Higgins (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) that was blocked. The Chargers caused another penalty inside the arc just 20 seconds later. Senior Meredith Michel (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fed the ball from the corner and freshman Shelby Card (Milanville, Pa./Honesdale) sent a shot wide, but it was not long until Maecy Chlebowski (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) intercepted a pass and immediately eliminated two defenders, carried the ball into the top right side of the circle and wound up for a shot to the opposite side of the cage for the first goal in program history.

AIC scored once more in the second half to cap the 7-1 score, however the Chargers were able to hold the Yellow Jackets off for four more shots before the final horn.

On the day, Shaker made 13 saves in the cage, increasing her total to 123 saves on the season, which is both second in the Northeast-10 and in all of NCAA Division II.

New Haven plays next against Pace on Thursday, September 28th for a match against Pace. Game time at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium is set for 7:00 pm.
