WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team earned their second-straight Northeast-10 match with an exciting 6-3 win over the Americant International College Yellow Jackets on a cool Saturday afternoon at the New Haven Chargers tennis courts.
Claiming wins at No. 2 doubles was junior
Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and sophomore
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip), who breezed past Morgan Hill and Alice Calabrese by an 8-0 score. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and junior
Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) also blanked their opponents, taking down Ashley Ala and Connie Yew, 8-0.
Freshman doubles pair
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) battled all the way until the end at the No. 1 spot, stretching the match all the way to a tiebreak where they fell 7-2 to ultimately take the tough 9-8 defeat.
New Haven won four of its six singles matches on the afternoon, first with Varrone winning at No. 3 singles with back-to-back 6-4 scores. Burridge also brought down her opponent in straight sets at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Finally, Mercurio (No. 5 singles) and sophomore
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) (No. 6 singles) did not allow a Yellow Jacket to win a game, each winning their matches with convincing 6-0 scores.
The Chargers will battle in their second-straight home NE10 match against Merrimack, tomorrow, Sunday, October 1
st. Match time against the Warriors is set for 1:00 pm at the University of New Haven tennis courts.
