RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Graduate student
Brian Rebelo (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) scored on a late penalty kick, but the Chargers fell short against Felician University at the Lyndenhurst Recreation Complex on Sunday afternoon.
It was an emotion-filled contest for both teams as the match featured six yellow cards and two converted penalty kicks to help determine the outcome.
After a scoreless first half, Felician took the lead in the 61
st minute, beating sophomore keeper
Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) on a penalty kick. The Chargers gained momentum and controlled the tempo with back to back shots when Rebelo got off a clean shot from the top of the box that went straight on and went off a Golden Falcon defender's hand. After the referee consulted with the linesman, the call stood, and Rebelo answered with a successful penalty kick in the 87
th minute. Just 19 seconds later, the Golden Falcons responded directly off the kickoff when Felician's Maxi Ojeda dribbled down the left side of the field and beat Lorusso on a low diagonal shot.
New Haven found themselves with one final opportunity after the eventual Golden Falcon game winning goal, as sophomore
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) took the matches final shot and was unable to level the score as Felician finalized the game, 2-1.
Of New Haven's nine total shots, five were on target with three shots on goal coming from Peduzzi. Despite being outshot 18-9, Lorusso kept the Chargers in the game, tallying six saves on the afternoon.
The Chargers will play one more non-conference match before NE10 action begins as they travel to Georgian Court University on Wednesday, September 6
th. Opening kick for that match is set for 2:00 pm.
