WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a team-high 11 kills from senior Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), the University of New Haven women's volleyball team extended its unbeaten streak in Northeast-10 Conference play to 4-0 with a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) of the Le Moyne Dolphins. Prior to the match, the Chargers honored the legacy of long-time athletic administrator Debbie Chin by naming the court at Charger Gymnasium in her honor.
Bussey's 11 kills represented the only player in the match in double figures and was her third straight game with 10 or more. Overall, Bussey finished the match with a .368 hitting average, tied for the team lead with sophomore Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who finished with nine kills. Rounding out the leading hitters was senior Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) with eight kills, while junior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) and senior Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) each finished with six.
As a team, the Chargers finished the match hitting .284 with a combined 44 kills in 109 attempts with 13 miscues. Overall, three New Haven players finished the match hitting above .300 with Peterson (.357) and Martins (.316) joining Nowicki and Bussey. New Haven's best hitting of the match came in the opening set when they cruised to a 25-17 victory with a .343 average. In that set, the Blue and Gold combined for 16 kills in 35 attempts with four errors.
Marshaling the New Haven offense on the afternoon was the junior setter, Rios, who finished with 31 assists in the six-two offense. Joining her was freshman Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) who chipped in seven assists. The Chargers also combined for six total service aces, led by freshman Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who snuck in a pair to go along with four kills.
Defensively, New Haven was led by junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) who defended 19 of the Dolphin's attacks, her ninth straight match in double figures. Following her among the defensive leaders was Rios with seven, Greathead with six and Martins with five. As a team, the Chargers combined for six total blocks with Peterson leading the efforts with four.
New Haven will return to action on Tuesday, October 4 when they host the Merrimack Warriors in the second of three-straight home matches.
