BOX SCORE
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team dropped the season opener to the Post University on Thursday by a 7-2 score. Despite the loss, New Haven played well as a team, winning 52 total games on the day compared to only four against Post almost exactly one year ago.
New Haven's first win came at No. 2 doubles in a thrilling 9-8 (12-10) win. Freshman
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and sophomore
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) fought off multiple Post match points and battled back to force a tiebreak. With the tiebreak at 10-10, the duo fired two straight points with Mercurio finishing the Eagles off on the final point with a nice shot to the back of the court.
After a scattered rain storm forced the teams to move the action from the New Haven Tennis Courts, singles play continued at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University. There, Gonzalez continued her impressive college debut at No. 1 singles, cruising past Maddy Young, 6-1 and 6-2.
