NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team won in commanding fashion at the Celentano Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Albertus Magnus Falcons, 9-0.
As a team, New Haven won all 96 games on the day and only surrendered 14. At No. 1 singles, freshman
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and junior
Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) defeated Alicia Weaver and Kelsea Wildman by an 8-1 score, while at No. 2 doubles,
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) teamed up to defeat Jess Coughlin and Izzy Sabino, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles,
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and
Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) slid past Nallely Magana, 8-1.
At No. 1 singles, Stephanie Gonzales defeated Alicia Weaver, 6-0, 6-1, while at No. 2 singles,
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) took down Jess Coughlin with consecutive 6-1 victories.
Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) played well at third singles, claiming two 6-2 wins against Izzy Sabino.
Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) beat Kelsea Wildman at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 6-1, and
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) only allowed one game against Nallely Magana with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Finally at No. 6 singles,
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) played well against LaKhena Rath and did not surrender a game, pushing out two 6-0 victories.
New Haven, now 1-1 on the season, begins Northeast-10 conference action tomorrow with a match against Southern New Hampshire. First serve for the match at the New Haven Chargers Tennis Courts begins at 11:00 am.
