Women's Basketball Downed in Cross-Divisional Battle at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team (6-7, 2-6 NE10) dropped a cross-divisional game to the Assumption College Greyhounds (4-9, 2-7 NE10), 58-44, on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.
 
New Haven was led by junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) who scored a team-high 14 points to help her to her fourth-straight game in double digit scoring. Kerr also led on the boards with a team-high nine rebounds. Also finishing in double digits was freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) with 10 points with a team-best four helpers. Shooting efficient from the floor was senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) (3-of-7) and sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) (2-of-3) who finished with seven and five points, respectively. Sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) was also among the top five scorers with six points and seven rebounds and three steals which each finished second on the team. Junior Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led defensively with a career-high two blocks.
 
New Haven was sent to the stripe eight times on the day and made all eight free throws for a perfect 100% mark for the first time this season. The Chargers also surrendered 15 turnovers while causing 22. From the 22 Greyhound turnovers, New Haven got 23 points, more than half of its point total on the day.
 
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • Kerr scored the game's first field goal just over 30 seconds into the contest, but Assumption exploded to an 18-2 run to end the quarter. In the stretch, Kerr made two of her two free throws to score all four of New Haven's points in the quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • It took over a minute for either team to score, but Pergola got on board for the Chargers at the 8:46 mark with a jump shot. Pergola would go on to score four straight points for New Haven as the Chargers trailed, 24-10.
  • Wormack put in a layup at 2:52 and classmate Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) hit a three, assisted by Smith with 46 seconds in the half before the Chargers entered the locker room, down 35-15.
 
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Neither team scored for the first three minutes out of the locker room, but Kerr broke the ice at 7:06 with a shot beyond the arc off a pass from Pergola.
  • After a good layup by Smith, Kerr hit her second three-pointer of the game, again assisted by Pergola.
  • Senior Khayla Trowell (Temple Hills, Md./Elizabeth Seton Catholic) closed out the third period with a layup and Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) added two free throws before the buzzer as New Haven trailed, 45-29 at the end of the third.
 
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • Kerr scored first again for New Haven in the frame, only to be answered by an Assumption field goal.
  • New Haven got five straight points thanks to a layup by Talley and a three-pointer by Smith to cut the deficit back to 11. After Assumption extended their lead back to 15 points, New Haven went on a 6-0 run with two Wormack field goals and a Pergola layup to cut the deficit all the way back to nine points with just under two minutes remaining, the smallest Greyhound lead with under three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
  • The comeback came too late for New Haven, as Assumption capped off the win with two successful free throws and a final three-pointer to top off the 58-44 final score.
 
New Haven looks to rebound for its second-straight cross-divisional road game at Saint Michael's College. Tip off at the Vincent C. Ross Sports Center on Tuesday, January 9th is slated for 5:30 pm.
