Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense Shines in Women's Basketball 52-43 Victory at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Behind sophomore Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany)'s third career double-double, the University of New Haven women's basketball team (7-7, 3-6 NE10) edged out the Saint Michael's Purple Knights (5-10, 2-8 NE10), 52-43, on Tuesday evening inside the Vincent C. Ross Sports Center in a Northeast-10 cross-divisional matchup.

Leading all scorers in the game was junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) (5-of-13 FG) and freshman Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) (6-of-12 FG) who each dropped 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Wormack (4-of-9 FG) rounded out the three Chargers in double figures with 12 points and also reached double digits in rebounding for the first time this season after registering nine rebounds in six games, including a stretch of five straight games.

Sophomore Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) doubled her career-high in assists, dishing out four of New Haven's 10 helpers. On the season, New Haven is now 6-1 when recording 10 or more assists in regulation. Senior Quana Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) knocked down two of the Charger's four three-pointers for her six-point total.

The Chargers held Saint Michael's to 29.1 percent shooting, the second-lowest opponent shooting percentage of the season. New Haven's 43 points allowed are a season low after holding the Purple Knights to a season-low point total last season with a 63-35 win.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • New Haven got off to a hot start on an 8-0 run with four different scorers before Saint Michael's scored its first field goal of the contest just over three minutes in.
  • The Purple Knights closed the quarter on a 5-0 run over the final 4:08 of the frame as New Haven led, 14-9 at the first break.
  • In the quarter, Pergola scored six of her 15 points in just five minutes on a 2-of-3 effort from the field and was also 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • The Charger defense came up big in the second quarter, holding the Purple Knights to 1-of-11 shooting while also forcing six turnovers. Brianna Purcell made the lone field goal for Saint Michael's 47 seconds into the second frame, as New Haven finished out the quarter on a 10-0 spurt.
  • Smith shot 2-of-3 in the second quarter with both of her three-pointers dropping in the frame. Pergola gain went 2-of-3 from the field, adding four more points.
  • Junior Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) pulled down a team-high three rebounds in the quarter.
  • The two points allowed in the quarter were the least amount of points allowed in a single frame since NCAA women's basketball instilled quarters in the 2015-16 season.
  • New Haven surrendered only 11 points in the first half, the fewest in a half since the squad allowed 12 points in the second half against Southern New Hampshire last season.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Despite being down 26-11 at the half, Saint Michael's stormed back in the third with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor.
  • Saint Michael's used two 5-0 runs to trim the Charger lead to 10 points on two occasions.
  • Talley assisted on a jumper by Pergola with ten seconds remaining before the Purple Knights answered with a three-point basket two seconds before the buzzer, trailing by 11 heading into the final quarter.
  • New Haven made just four field goals but was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line, extending the team free throw streak to 14 consecutive made free throws.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • Kerr started the fourth quarter with a three-point play to give the Chargers a 14-point advantage to start the quarter.
  • Saint Michael's kept the heavy pressure on New Haven, using a 9-1 run to make it a seven-point game with 4:30 remaining, the smallest lead for the Chargers since the score was 16-11 with 9:13 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Chargers pulled away with Kerr scoring New Haven's final eight points of the game. In all, Kerr scored 11 of her 15 points in the final ten minutes.
