Women's Tennis Wins Sixth of Last Seven with Key Victory over Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
The University of New Haven women's tennis team earned a crucial Northeast-10 victory on Wednesday evening, downing the Assumption Greyhounds at the New Haven tennis courts, 5-2. With the win, New Haven improved to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the NE10.
 
Assumption took early command of the match claiming the one doubles point, but the No. 1 doubles pair of graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) earned a 6-4 victory over Camille Latoni and Paige Benoit.
 
The Blue and Gold went on to win five of its six singles matches to take control of the match. Earning the first singles win was Fermosel who defeated Chappell in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-5 to improve to 6-2 in dual matches. Gonzalez improved to 5-4 in dual matches with a straight-set battle over Benoit, 7-5, 7-5. Freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) seized the lead for the Chargers at No. 4 singles, earning her team-leading eighth dual match win of the season, with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Valeria Sanchez.
 
With the Chargers ahead 3-2, senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) clinched the match at No. 6 singles for the team's fourth point on the day. Burridge dropped the first set, 3-6, and fought back with a 6-4 second set before running away with the victory using a 6-2 third-set win against Veronica Op. Sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) played a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles to put an exclamation point on the match for the Chargers, edging out Latoni in the first set, 6-4 before falling in a second-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3). Rodriguez capped off her day with a 6-2 victory in the third set.
 
The women's tennis team looks to keep it rolling on Saturday, October 13 for a Northeast-10 match against Merrimack. First serve at North Andover High School in North Andover, Mass. is slated for 1:00 pm. Following that match, New Haven returns home on Monday, October 15 for another NE10 match against Bentley.
