Women's Tennis Suffers 5-2 Setback at Merrimack

MIDDLETON, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team suffered its first defeat in over two weeks on Saturday, falling to the Merrimack Warriors on the road, 5-2 in a tough Northeast-10 conference matchup. The Chargers drop to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in NE10 play.

Merrimack earned the matches' first point in doubles, taking two of the three courts. New Haven got its lone doubles win at the No. 1 court including graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina), who topped Mana Seifaei and Rosemary Campanella, 6-4 to improve to 9-1 as a pair in dual matches.

Fermosel and Gonzalez each went on to win their singles matches, as Fermosel sailed past Seifaei in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to increase her dual match record to 7-2. Gonzalez played a tight match against Lauren Persson, but eventually emerged victorious in a three-set battle. Persson took the first set over Gonzalez, 4-6, however Gonzalez fought back to take the next two sets with two-straight 6-2 marks.

The Blue and Gold returns to action on Monday, October 15 for another NE10 contest against Bentley. First serve at the University of New Haven tennis courts is slated for 4:00 pm.
