Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morello Scores Early, Women's Soccer Settles for 2 OT Draw Against Queens (N.Y.)

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tallied her team leading sixth goal in just the second minute of action, but Queens (N.Y.) had the equalizer with five minutes remaining in regulation as the University of New Haven women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 non-conference double-overtime draw on a cool Saturday at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

Shots finished in favor of the Chargers, 21-13, with a 9-0 edge in chances for the home team across both overtime periods.  Morello and sophomore Jordan Nichols (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) led the offensive end with two shots on goal each, while Nichols and sophomore Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) led the Chargers with three total opportunities each. Junior goalkeeper Kyra Wolonsavich (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) played all 110 minutes in goal, making six stops during the match.

New Haven got on the board at the 1:40 mark, when sophomore Samantha Roth (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) fed forward a perfect pass into the box to find Morello, who was able to slide in and bend her shot around the left side of Nicoletta Pravata. The Blue and Gold continued the offensive dominance with five-straight more shots, eventually to find themselves outshooting the Knights, 6-0 by the ninth minute of action. Queens found a groove over the next 12 minutes of action with four shots during the time frame, one of which was stopped by Wolonsavich before another attempt was headed just right of the post.

Despite the Knights outshooting the Chargers, 8-4 in the second half, New Haven controlled the pace until midway in the frame, when Queens had four shots within nine minutes, with Wolonsavich making three stops. In the 80th minute, it looked as if New Haven was about to put the match away, however Peduzzi's one-on-one chance was saved by Pravata to keep the match within one. The table turned just five minutes later, as Queens buried the equalizer off of a rebounded header shot to level the score at one.

New Haven was ready to put things away very quickly into the first overtime as Nichols gained possession right away but had her shot saved in the first minute. After re-gaining possession, Roth's strike hit the right and bounced off a New Haven player, but the Chargers were unable to get lucky as the ball trickled past the end line. New Haven added four shots by the end of the first overtime period, and three more in the second but settled for the 1-1 draw in the final non-conference contest of the season.

The Chargers return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 16 for a NE10 contest at American International. Kickoff at Ronald J. Abdow Field in Springfield, Mass. is slated for 7:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend, live stats and video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
