Women's Tennis Clinches First NE10 Playoff Berth in Six Seasons with 7-0 Sweep of Bentley

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's tennis team clinched its first NE10 playoff berth since the 2012-13 season with a sweep of the Bentley University Falcons, 7-0 on its home courts. With the victory, the Chargers improve to 8-3 overall and 7-3 in the NE10.

It was a dominant day overall, as the Chargers got off to a hot start with a sweep of doubles action. The Blue and Gold saw sweeps from both the No. 2 and 3 courts, as freshman Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and sophomore Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) moved to 7-4 in dual matches with a 6-0 sweep of Evann Welty and Courtney Flynn. Junior Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) added a dominant 6-0 victory at the No. 3 court, improving to 3-1 as a pair. At the No. 1 court, graduate student Laura Fermosel (Colmenar Viejo, Spain/ÍES Rosa Chacel) and sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) elevated their dual match record to 10-1 with a 6-4 win over Hannah Fabianski and Katie Tynan.

The Chargers kept up the pace into singles play, when Mika first sailed past Morgan Kreiss and did not allow a game with back-to-back 6-0 sets to improve to 9-2 in dual matches on the year. Sophomore Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) added another sweep for the Blue and Gold, downing Cindy Luo in two-straight 6-0 sets. Senior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) cruised past Courtney Flynn for her first victory of the season, 6-2, 6-1. Fermosel also played well at the No. 1 court to increase her record to 7-2, downing Fabianski in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Rodriguez battled to a 7-5 victory in the first set before shutting down her match against Tynan with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 court, while at No. 2 singles, Gonzalez fought to a three-set battle to Welty, eventually coming out on top with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 decision.

The Blue and Gold will close out NE10 action on Saturday, October 20 against the Le Moyne College Dolphins. Match time at the New Haven Tennis courts is slated for 4:00 pm. The Chargers will then close out the fall regular season a day later for a non-region match against UC Irvine at the University of New Haven Tennis Courts.
