Volleyball Back in the Win Column with Three-Set Road Sweep of Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (18-4, 8-1 NE10) returned to its winning ways on Saturday with a straight set sweep of Stonehill on the road. Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was sophomore outside hitter Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who was the only player to finish in double figures with a dozen kills.

Greathead's 12 kills came on a .379 attack average as New Haven combined to hit .364 for the day after opening up the road match with a .417 average in the opening set. That set included 11 kills and just one error in 24 attempts. Overall for the match, the Chargers combined to finish with 42 kills with sophomore middle Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) following Greathead with nine kills, which came on a team-high .533 attack percentage (one error in 15 attempts).

Rounding out the leading hitters was junior Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and freshman Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) who finished with eight and seven kills respectively. Senior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) captained New Haven to its .364 team hitting percentage as she closed out the match with 35 assists while adding five kills and eight digs.

Defensively, New Haven was led by senior libero Briana Mirmina who was the only player to finish in double figures with 15 digs. Rios and sophomore setter Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) followed with eight digs while Greathead rounded out the leaders with seven.

New Haven also combined for six total blocks in the game, led by Garden who finished with three. Fera and Nowicki also finished with a pair of blocks on the day, while Rios led New Haven with two of the three service aces on the afternoon.

The Chargers will conclude a three-game road trek on Tuesday night when they travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. for a key East Region match-up against NYIT. First serve at Recreation Hall is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
