Scorcia Blasts First Career Goal in 2-1 Double Overtime Setback Versus Merrimack

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's soccer team scored an early goal however could not come out on top against the Merrimack Warriors in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday evening at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

Offensive opportunities were nearly even on the night, as Merrimack tallied 10 shots to New Haven's 16, also having the edge on shots on goal, 10-8. Junior Grace Scorcia (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) net her first career goal for the Chargers early on, while sophomore Jenna Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) led the offense with four shots, all four on target. Senior Emily Morello (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and freshman Alyssa McMahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) also had one strike each. In goal, sophomore keeper Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made eight stops while Merrimack combined for seven total saves.

Scorcia took an early lead for New Haven in just the 13th minute of action, as she intended to feed a cross, however her ball lifted and curled past Merrimack's keeper, Megan Langlois for an early 1-0 advantage. After 23 minutes into the second stanza, Merrimack sent in a header goal off of a corner kick, leveling the match at one goal apiece in the 69th minute. Minutes later, Peduzzi had a up-close look at the net, but Emily Maier made a defensive save to keep the Chargers from gaining an edge. McMahon had one last look at the mesh just before overtime, but her strike was saved by the Warriors.

In the overtime periods, New Haven was outshot by the Warriors, 8-2. The Chargers posted the first two strikes during extra time, before Merrimack piled on five-straight opportunities before the end of the first overtime. The visitors built up momentum early in the second overtime with two shots, before the game-winner was put in by Taylor Cogliaino, as she grabbed hold of a loose ball and scored in an empty net.
